Book Review: Three Dark Crowns by Kendare Blake

Book Synopsis

Every generation on the island of Fennbirn, a set of triplets is born: three queens, all equal heirs to the crown and each possessor of a coveted magic. Mirabella is a fierce elemental, able to spark hungry flames or vicious storms at the snap of her fingers. Katharine is a poisoner, one who can ingest the deadliest poisons without so much as a stomachache. Arsinoe, a naturalist, is said to have the ability to bloom the reddest rose and control the fiercest of lions.

But becoming the Queen Crowned isn’t solely a matter of royal birth. Each sister has to fight for it. And it’s not just a game of win or lose…it’s life or death. The night the sisters turn sixteen, the battle begins. The last queen standing gets the crown.

If only it was that simple. Katharine is unable to tolerate the weakest poison, and Arsinoe, no matter how hard she tries, can’t make even a weed grow. The two queens have been shamefully faking their powers, taking care to keep each other, the island, and their powerful sister Mirabella none the wiser. But with alliances being formed, betrayals taking shape, and ruthless revenge haunting the queens’ every move, one thing is certain: the last queen standing might not be the strongest…but she may be the darkest. Author Interview: Vic James

Thank you to author Dr. Vic James for stopping by to share some thoughts on Gilded Cage (released February 14, 2017) and a huge thank you for being my very first author interview! Gilded Cage is an atmospheric mix of aristocratic London, magic, and the fight for equality. I was lucky enough to win an Advance Readers Edition of Gilded Cage in a Goodreads Giveaway and could hardly put it down. I just finished last night, so my review will be up on Goodreads soon!

Book Review: A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness

Book Synopsis

The monster showed up after midnight. As they do.

But it isn’t the monster Conor’s been expecting. He’s been expecting the one from his nightmare, the one he’s had nearly every night since his mother started her treatments, the one with the darkness and the wind and the screaming…

This monster is something different, though. Something ancient, something wild. And it wants the most dangerous thing of all from Conor.

It wants the truth. Continue Reading

Readathons: Yay or Nay?

Do you like participating in readathons or do you prefer to read on your own terms? This past weekend I joined in the 24in48 readathon. Beginning at 12:01am on Saturday morning and running through 11:59pm on Sunday night, the goal is to read for 24 hours out of that 48 hour period. You can split that up however you’d like: 20 hours on Saturday, 4 hours on Sunday; 12 hours each day; six 4 hour sessions with 4 hour breaks in between; whatever you’d like.

This was the first readathon I’ve joined in many years and it was a ton of fun! Rather than trying to reach the full 24 hours on my first try, I picked one series I’ve been meaning to read for a while and set my goal for 12+ hours. To make it more fun and break up the solitary hours, I decided to host a reading event for my bookish friends to come to read, drink tea, and socialize throughout the readathon.

Plenty of books were read and lots of fun was had by all!

The books I read were:

First Test (Protector of the Small #1) by Tamora Pierce
Page (Protector of the Small #2) by Tamora Pierce
Squire (Protector of the Small #3) by Tamora Pierce
Lady Knight (Protector of the Small #4) by Tamora Pierce (partial)
